A good email deliverability rate is 89 percent or higher, measured as the share of your mail that actually arrives. From 83 to 88 percent is acceptable and anything below 83 percent is poor. The measured average is 83.1 percent.
If the number on your dashboard is 98 percent, you are not looking at inbox placement. You are looking at acceptance, which counts every message the receiving server took, including everything it dropped straight into spam. Both numbers are real. Only one of them predicts replies.
This piece gives you both, with the full distribution behind each, so you can work out which one you have been reading.
Measured as the share of your mail that arrives rather than the share a server accepted, the published bands are these.
| Deliverability rate | Rating |
|---|---|
| Above 89 percent | Excellent |
| 83 to 88 percent | Acceptable |
| Below 83 percent | Poor |
Those are EmailToolTester's bands, from seed testing that sends to real mailboxes and records where each message lands. It is the most credible public measurement of arrival available, because doing it industry-wide means seeding inboxes across platforms nobody owns all of.
Two caveats that matter and that most articles quoting this figure leave out. Their test counts a message as arrived if it reaches the inbox or the Gmail Promotions tab, so it is slightly more generous than strict primary-inbox placement. And it tests newsletter and email marketing platforms, not cold outbound, so treat it as the ceiling a well-run marketing program hits rather than a cold email benchmark. Their most recently published round is January 2024.
Almost every sending platform reports acceptance and calls it deliverability. That number is genuinely useful, it is just answering a narrower question, and it always looks far healthier than placement does.
Here is the full distribution for it, from the Smartlead State of Cold Email report (H1 2026), covering more than 850 million cold emails sent between January and June 2026.
| Sender band | Deliverability rate (accepted) | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Top 10 percent | 99.72% | Elite list hygiene. Every address verified before it enters a campaign. |
| Top 25 percent | 99.27% | Clean, well-verified lists and disciplined sending. |
| Median | 98.46% | The typical sender, and still comfortably safe. |
| Bottom 25 percent | 96.79% | Past the point where bounce volume reads as a spam signal. |
| Bottom 10 percent | 93.29% | Heavy filtering, usually list decay. |
| Bottom 5 percent | 89.15% | Deliverability collapse. |
Put the two side by side and the problem becomes obvious. The median sender has 98.46 percent of mail accepted and roughly 83 percent of it placed. The 15 point gap is mail that was accepted and filed in spam. No bounce, no error, no signal anywhere in your reporting.
Two things follow from this distribution that a single average cannot tell you.
The useful range on acceptance is narrow. A top-decile sender beats the median by about 1.3 points, which nobody is going to notice in a dashboard. That is precisely why acceptance rates give false comfort. The damage lives at the other end, where the median-to-bottom-decile drop is over five points and compounds quickly.
Direction beats comparison. A flat 98.4 percent is a healthy program. A 98.4 percent that was 99.3 percent last month is a list problem you have not found yet. You can check where your own number falls on the cold email bounce rate benchmark.
This is worth laying out plainly, because the published guidance on this question does not agree with itself. Every source below quotes a "good" rate well above the average it publishes elsewhere on the same page.
| Source | Quoted good rate | What it is measuring | What the same source also reports |
|---|---|---|---|
| PowerDMARC, citing Mailgun's State of Email Deliverability 2025 | 95 to 99 percent, with 98 and above called the gold standard | Inbox placement, by its own stated definition | Its own FAQ puts the average global inbox placement rate at 83.1 percent |
| Litmus | A goal of 90 to 98 percent, and Litmus aims for 95 or above | Delivery rate, which it defines as not having bounced | Cites MailChimp averages of 0.21 percent hard and 0.79 percent soft bounce |
| Mailjet, from Sinch Mailjet's research | Typically above 95 percent | Delivery rate, which it defines as delivery to any folder including spam | Its own research found 88 percent of senders cannot correctly define the metric |
| EmailToolTester | Above 89 percent excellent, 83 to 88 acceptable | Arrival in the inbox or Promotions tab, seed tested on newsletter platforms | An average of 83.1 percent, so 16.9 percent never arrive |
| Smartlead State of Cold Email (H1 2026) | 98.46 percent at the median | Acceptance by the receiving server, measured on cold outbound | The full distribution, from 89.15 percent at the bottom to 99.72 percent at the top |
The pattern is the same everywhere. A benchmark gets quoted for one metric and an average gets quoted for a different one, and the two end up in the same article without anybody reconciling them. Mailjet's own research is the tell, since 88 percent of senders cannot correctly define the metric they are being benchmarked on.
If you take one thing from this page, take the habit of asking which of the two any number refers to before you act on it.
| Metric | What it measures | Typical good number |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery rate | Emails the receiving server accepted, wherever they ended up, spam folder included | 98.5% and above |
| Email deliverability rate | Used loosely. Most tools mean delivery rate, most articles mean placement | Ask which one before using it |
| Inbox placement rate | Emails that arrived rather than being filtered to spam or dropped | Above 89% excellent, 83 to 88 acceptable |
A campaign with 98.5 percent acceptance and 78 percent placement is completely normal and completely fixable. What is not fixable is not knowing which of the two your dashboard shows.
When a vendor quotes you 99 percent deliverability, they are quoting acceptance. No sending platform can promise placement, because placement is decided by the receiving mailbox provider based on your reputation, not theirs.
Deliverability rate (acceptance) = (emails accepted by the receiving server / emails sent) x 100
Send 10,000 emails, have 9,846 accepted, and you are exactly on the median at 98.46 percent. The other 154 are hard bounces, soft bounces, blocks and rejections.
Inbox placement rate = (emails that arrived in the inbox / emails delivered) x 100
This is the one that decides whether anyone replies, and your sending tool usually cannot see it. Measuring it means seeding real mailboxes across Gmail, Outlook and Yahoo, sending to them, and checking where each landed. That is what a deliverability test does.
An email accepted and dropped straight into spam counts as delivered by almost every platform. This is why a 98 percent rate and a flat reply rate sit together so often. Nothing bounced. Nobody saw it either.
Deliverability is about whether the message arrived. Engagement is about whether it worked. They are connected, since providers use engagement to decide future placement, but they are not the same measurement.
Mail caught by a gateway like Microsoft Defender or Proofpoint before final delivery is counted as delivered by some platforms and not others. If you send to enterprise domains, ask your provider how it handles this before trusting the number.
83.1 percent, across the email platforms EmailToolTester tests. Their own summary of what that means is blunt: 16.9 percent of all emails never reach their intended destination, either caught by a spam filter or gone missing altogether.
The missing portion is the part worth sitting with. Those sends produce no bounce, no error and no signal at all. They look identical to a success in your reporting. If you have ever run a campaign with normal delivery numbers and near-zero replies, this is the likely explanation.
Placement varies by what you send, in a consistent order.
| Sender type | Where it typically sits |
|---|---|
| Transactional (receipts, password resets) | Highest of any category. The recipient asked for it and almost never complains. |
| Opt-in B2B newsletter | Strong, and tracks list hygiene and engagement more than anything else. |
| Ecommerce promotional | Lower. Send frequency and complaint rates both push placement down. |
| Cold outbound | The widest range of any category, and the one most determined by setup rather than industry. |
Published requirements, with the date each took effect. All three apply above 5,000 messages a day to that provider's consumer domains.
| Provider | Requirement | In effect since |
|---|---|---|
| Gmail | SPF and DKIM, plus DMARC at p=none or stricter with alignment on one of them. One-click unsubscribe using the List-Unsubscribe header (RFC 8058). Spam rate in Postmaster Tools under 0.3 percent, ideally under 0.1 percent. | February 2024, one-click unsubscribe enforced from June 2024 |
| Yahoo | The same authentication and one-click unsubscribe requirements for bulk senders, with complaint rates held low. | February 2024 |
| Microsoft outlook.com, hotmail.com, live.com | SPF must pass, DKIM must pass, DMARC at p=none or stricter with alignment on SPF or DKIM. Non-compliant mail is rejected outright with a 550 5.7.515 error rather than filtered to junk. | May 5, 2025 |
Two things follow.
The 0.3 percent spam rate is a Gmail measurement in Postmaster Tools, and it is the one number here you can check for free with no tooling at all. If you are above it, nothing else you fix will matter until it comes down.
Microsoft rejects rather than filters. A message failing its authentication check does not land in junk where somebody might still find it. It bounces. If Outlook and Hotmail delivery fell off a cliff and stayed there, check DMARC alignment first.
Six fixes cover most cases. Order matters, because the later ones do not work until the earlier ones are in place.
The highest-leverage, lowest-effort step there is, and the dataset puts a number on it. Authenticated senders earn a reply about every 108 contacts. Unauthenticated senders need about 120. That is roughly 1 in 9 of your contacts, lost to a setup you do once per domain.
Alignment is the part teams miss. Having the records is not enough if the domain in your From address does not match the domain that passed authentication. Our DMARC setup guide covers the records, the email deliverability guide covers how the three work together, and the authentication benchmark has the full comparison.
Providers give a brand new sending address no benefit of the doubt. Warmup builds the sending history and engagement signal that lets real campaigns through. Skipping it is the second most common reason a technically correct setup still underperforms.
Verified addresses only, no role accounts unless they genuinely belong, nothing bought. The median cold sender bounces at 1.54 percent. The bottom quartile sits above 3.21 percent, where providers start reading bounce volume as a spam signal, and the bottom 5 percent bounce above 10.85 percent. Verification alone moves most senders from the bottom quartile back toward the median.
| Sender band | Sends per mailbox per day |
|---|---|
| Bottom 10 percent (most conservative) | 4 |
| Bottom 25 percent | 8 |
| Median | 14 |
| Top 25 percent | 24 |
| Top 10 percent | 42 |
| Top 5 percent | 70 |
The median mailbox sends 14 a day. The heaviest 5 percent push around 70, close to where the pattern starts looking machine-like to a filter. The safer route to more volume is more mailboxes, not more per mailbox, which is why the typical account runs around 20 of them. Full distribution on the sends per mailbox benchmark.
Heavy formatting, multiple links, tracked images and aggressive subject lines all read as bulk marketing to a filter. Cold outbound that looks like a one-to-one email gets treated like one.
Required at Gmail and Yahoo for bulk senders. Most modern tools add it automatically, but verify yours does rather than assuming.
Work through those in order rather than in parallel. Reputation recovers on the same rolling window that damaged it, so the gain shows up gradually rather than on the next send.
Most published benchmarks come from marketing email sent to lists that opted in. Cold outbound is a different problem, and applying marketing benchmarks to it produces bad decisions.
Your recipients did not ask for the message. That changes how complaints accumulate and how fast a small share of annoyed recipients damages a domain. Marketing email has an engaged base absorbing the damage. Cold outbound does not.
Your volume is spread across many mailboxes rather than one. A marketing program sends a million messages from one domain with years of history. A cold program sends the same volume across dozens of mailboxes, each with its own reputation, each able to fail independently. Your real number is the distribution across those mailboxes, not the average. An account averaging 98 percent with four mailboxes at 80 percent is not a 98 percent account.
Your infrastructure choice matters more than it does in marketing email.
| Sending infrastructure | Contacts needed per reply |
|---|---|
| Gmail | About 90 |
| Outlook | About 120 |
| Custom mail servers | About 179 |
Custom infrastructure only pays off with the expertise to maintain its reputation, which most teams do not have. The provider comparison has the detail.
Your feedback loop is slower and quieter. Marketing senders watch opens and clicks on large samples and spot problems within hours. Cold senders work with small samples and long reply cycles, so a placement problem can run two weeks before a reply rate drop makes it visible. This is why seed-list placement testing matters more for cold outbound than for any other category. It is the only way to see the problem before your pipeline does.
Smart Delivery is Smartlead's deliverability engine. It runs seed-list inbox placement testing so you see where mail actually lands rather than whether it was accepted, monitors blocklist exposure across your sending domains, rotates sending mailboxes to spread reputation load, and flags mailboxes that start drifting before the drift becomes a bounce. That per-mailbox visibility is what matters for cold outbound, since account averages hide exactly the failures you need to catch.
Every mailbox in your Smartlead account warms continuously, with no cap on how many you can warm and no per-mailbox fee.
Warmup mail lands in the inbox about 99 percent of the time across every major provider, at 99.0 percent on Outlook and 98.8 percent on Gmail and custom servers. That figure measures warmup traffic moving inside the warmup pool, not your cold campaigns, so it is not a campaign placement rate. What it shows is that the mechanism works as intended everywhere, which means a mailbox leaving warmup with weak placement has a setup problem rather than a warmup problem. Full breakdown on the warmup inbox placement benchmark.
Both are part of every Smartlead plan rather than add-ons.
SmartAssistant is the account-aware AI assistant inside Smartlead. When the numbers drop and you do not want to dig through the data yourself, you ask it.
"Diagnose deliverability on this mailbox" runs a real check against your setup rather than handing you a generic article. It looks at SPF, DKIM and DMARC, warmup pace, your inbox versus spam ratio during warmup, daily volume against mailbox age, and your copy for trigger words, then tells you which of those is the actual problem for your account.
You can ask it to act on what it finds. "Enable warmup on this mailbox and start at a conservative pace" and "What is my safe daily sending volume" are both things it handles directly. Before anything destructive, such as pausing or stopping a live send, it stops and asks you to confirm.
Above 89 percent is excellent and 83 to 88 percent is acceptable, measured as the share of mail that arrives. The measured average is 83.1 percent. If your tool reports acceptance instead, the median across 850 million cold emails in the Smartlead State of Cold Email report is 98.46 percent, and the top quartile clears 99.27 percent.
Most tools mean delivery rate, which counts anything the receiving server accepted including mail filed in spam. Inbox placement counts only what actually arrived. A campaign can show 98.5 percent deliverability and 60 percent placement at the same time. Always confirm which one your tool reports.
Measured as arrival, EmailToolTester's seed testing puts the average at 83.1 percent, meaning 16.9 percent never reach their destination. Measured as acceptance, the median cold sender sits at 98.46 percent across 850 million emails.
On acceptance, briefly, on a small clean list. The top decile runs 99.72 percent, which is about as close as anyone gets at volume. On inbox placement, no. Soft bounces happen, mailboxes fill up, people leave companies and filters change.
Above 2 percent is the warning zone and above 3 percent is the danger zone. The median cold sender bounces at 1.54 percent, while the bottom quartile sits above 3.21 percent, where placement and sender reputation start to degrade.
The median mailbox sends about 14 a day and most senders sit between 8 and 24. The heaviest 5 percent push around 70, close to the safe ceiling. Scale by adding mailboxes rather than pushing any single one harder.
Yes, and it is measurable. Authenticated senders earn a reply about every 108 contacts against 120 for unauthenticated ones, so skipping SPF, DKIM and DMARC costs roughly 1 in 9 of your contacts for a setup you do once per domain.
Weekly while campaigns are running, monthly for steady-state programs. Drops show up fast, since the enforcement thresholds at Gmail, Yahoo and Microsoft trigger throttling within days rather than weeks.
Only at sustained high volume, because a dedicated IP has no reputation until you build one and needs consistent sending to keep it. Below that threshold a shared IP with a well-managed sender pool performs better. Smartlead supports both.
Gmail publishes 0.3 percent as the ceiling and recommends staying under 0.1 percent, measured in Postmaster Tools. Above 0.3 percent you lose access to mitigation, which is the fastest way to damage placement.
Smartlead's free deliverability test runs a seed-list placement check across Gmail, Outlook and Yahoo and reports where your mail actually landed rather than whether it was accepted.
Methodology: acceptance, bounce, volume, authentication and provider figures come from the Smartlead State of Cold Email report (H1 2026), covering more than 850 million cold emails sent through Smartlead between January and June 2026. Arrival and inbox placement figures come from EmailToolTester's seed testing of newsletter platforms, most recently published January 2024. Competitor claims were verified on the source pages on 16 September 2026. Provider requirements come from Gmail and Microsoft's published sender guidelines.
