What the data shows

Most mailboxes send far less than published limits allow. The median is 14 a day, and three in four mailboxes send fewer than 24.

The spread is wide at the top. The busiest 5% send 70 or more a day, five times the median and sixteen times the quietest 10%.

Volume comes from mailbox count, not from pushing each mailbox harder. The typical account runs 20 mailboxes, and 20 mailboxes at 14 a day is 280 emails without any mailbox going above the median.

How this compares with sending limits

Published guides put the per-mailbox ceiling anywhere from 10 to 150 a day. Smartlead's guidance is to keep each mailbox at 50 cold emails a day or fewer.

The platform data sits well inside that. Three in four mailboxes send fewer than 24 a day and the busiest 10% start at 42. Only the busiest 5%, at 70 or more, go past it.

What this data can't tell you

It shows how many emails mailboxes send, not what that volume does to results. It doesn't compare reply or bounce rates by daily volume, and it doesn't separate new mailboxes from warmed ones.

How to use these benchmarks

  • Start low after warmup. The average sender warms up for 8 days before the first campaign, then stay at or under 50 a day per mailbox.
  • Add mailboxes to scale. Accounts reach higher daily totals by running more mailboxes, and pre-configured email accounts shorten the setup.
  • Keep warmup running on every mailbox while it sends.
  • Watch bounces as volume grows. The median sender bounces at 1.54%, and a quarter bounce at 3.21% or higher.
  • Fit the daily volume into the morning. Reply rates peak between 6am and 10am in the recipient's time zone.

Frequently asked questions

How many cold emails can one mailbox send per day?

Most mailboxes send 8 to 24 cold emails a day, and the median is 14. Keep each mailbox at 50 a day or fewer, and add mailboxes when you need more volume.

Is sending 40 emails a day a lot?

For one mailbox, yes. 40 a day puts a mailbox close to the busiest 10%, which start at 42. The median mailbox sends 14.

Is 100 cold emails a day per mailbox too many?

Yes. It is double the 50-a-day ceiling and more than 95% of mailboxes send, since the busiest 5% start at 70. Spread that volume across more mailboxes instead.

Methodology
