Benchmarks / Follow-ups

Do cold email follow-ups work?

Yes. Every follow-up still earns replies, though each earns fewer than the one before. The first email replies at 1.18%, the second at 0.73% and the seventh at 0.33%. At these rates, follow-ups would bring in about half the replies of a 3-email sequence.

What the data shows

Follow-ups keep working. The second email earns 62% of the first email's reply rate, the third 47% and the fourth 42%. Even the seventh earns 28%.

They add up. A single email earns about 12 replies per 1,000 contacts. Three emails earn about 25, and seven earn about 40, with follow-ups bringing in 71% of them.

The returns shrink. Each extra email adds fewer replies than the last, from 7 more per 1,000 contacts for the second email to 3 more for the seventh.

How this compares with common advice

A vendor study of 53 million cold emails found that follow-ups brought in 44% of positive replies. The step rates here land in the same range, with follow-ups bringing in 38% of replies in a 2-email sequence and 52% in a 3-email one.

What this data can't tell you

It can't measure annoyance, unsubscribes or spam complaints. The totals above are arithmetic on the step rates, and they assume every contact gets every step. Senders who run long sequences may also differ from those who stop early, so later steps won't reply the same way for every list.

How to use these benchmarks

  • Send at least one follow-up. The second email earns a reply every 137 contacts.
  • Plan for 3 or 4 emails. The median sequence runs 3 emails, and only the longest 10% run 5 or more.
  • Give each follow-up its own reason to reply. The follow-up email guide covers what to write in each one.
  • Leave a gap between steps. 88.5% of replies arrive within 24 hours of an email.
  • Schedule the steps once with automated follow-ups rather than sending each one by hand.

Frequently asked questions

Are follow-up emails a good idea?

For cold email, yes. The second email earns a 0.73% reply rate, 62% of the first email's rate. At the step rates in this data, follow-ups would bring in about half the replies of a 3-email sequence.

Are follow-up emails pushy?

The data can't measure how recipients feel. It does show that people keep replying to them. The seventh email in a sequence still earns 0.33%, one reply per 303 contacts.

Which email in a sequence gets the most replies?

The first, at 1.18%. The second earns 0.73%, and every later step earns less, down to 0.33% for the seventh.

Methodology

More than 850 million emails sent through Smartlead, using combined, anonymous platform data only. Only senders with at least 500 emails sent in the period are included. Reply rate by step is the reply rate for emails sent at each position in the sequence. Replies per 1,000 contacts adds up the step rates for each sequence length.
